DESCRIPTION:After the success of last year’s pilot event\, we are so excited to be able to welcome everyone to Warstone Lane Cemetery to see the pumpkin display in person this year!\nMissed the video from last year? Check it out here! \n\n  \nCarve a pumpkin\, drop it off\, and then see it lit up in a Pumpkin Spectacular at Warstone lane Cemetery\, outside in the catacombs circle on Friday 29th October from 4pm til 7pm.\nWe’ll also have stalls and activities for you to enjoy including glowsticks and craft activity packs to take home\, info about nocturnal wildlife and a stall from our local Fire Brigade team to chat to you about staying safe with bonfire and fireworks this time of year! \nWant to get involved? Here’s how! \n1. Have fun at home carving your pumpkin (or book a slot of horizon coffee here)\n\n\n2. Arrange a time to drop it off with us by emailing josie.wall@jqdt.org. We can accept pumpkins from 22nd to 28th October but as our building is closed to the public during renovation works\, you need to make an appointment so we can arrange to meet you.\n\n\n\n3. On Friday 29th October we’ll create a beautiful display of all the pumpkins in the unique and atmospheric surroundings of the catacombs circle at Warstone Lane Cemetery. You can arrive from 4pm to come and see them all and visit the rest of the event including stalls and activities. You can some along even if you didn’t carve a pumpkin! \nWe’ll have lots of thigs to do including:\n– Meet the team from Ladywood Fire Station and learn about fire safety at this time of year with fireworks and bonfires\n– Join Sustainable life to learn about bats and other nocturnal wildlife. They’ll have bat detectors and craft kits to take home!\n– Sustrans will be chatting to you about walking and cycling in the JQ. Make your own spooky cycling badge!\n– Horizon Coffee are open late to provide all your refreshment needs including delicious homemade cakes and hot drinks including pumpkin spice lattes! \n\nThis event is fully wheelchair accessible and suitable for all ages\, but takes place outside after dark. Please dress warmly and be aware that lighting levels in the cemeteries will be low – paths will be lighted to guide you from the entrance to the pumpkins but you may wish to bring your own torch or lantern too. This event is free of charge and booking is not required. Halloween costumes optional but encouraged!

SUMMARY:Cyanotype Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A hands on workshop\, learning how to make cyanotype blueprints – an early photographic technique using foraged and natural materials. \nOutdoor workshop in the chapel footprint garden in Warstone Lane Cemetery with artist Jo Gane\, places limited to ensure social distancing.  \nThis workshop offers a hands-on opportunity to make cyanotype blueprints. The cyanotype process is one of the earliest photographic processes\, invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842 and involves using paper coated with light sensitive iron salts to produce prints with a distinctive Prussian blue colour.  \nPrints can be made with natural materials foraged from around the cemetery such as leaves and feathers – or feel free to bring objects to work with. If you are bringing materials to print from\, small objects (no bigger than an A4 sheet) which can lie flat and are partially opaque work the best – lace and fabrics can be very effective. Jo will be bringing pre-coated cyanotype paper for ease of use out on location\, however instructions and support about how to coat paper and work with this process at home will also be provided.

DESCRIPTION:A fun workshop for ages 12-18. Learn lino printing\, be inspired by beautiful carvings in the cemeteries. See your art in the JQ station!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us to learn about the history of our wonderful Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries and to explore the creative medium of lino printing! A fun art workshop for ages 12-18. \nOur 3 hour workshop will involve a visit to the cemeteries to discover the use of symbols and typography around the site before sketching those that excite you the most. We will then return to the Hive to learn about the process of lino printing in a hands-on workshop by BCU graduates\, Collette McCann and Beth Ingleton\, who are avid lino printers! \nYou are then invited to design and print your own lino designs which will be displayed at the JQ train station in October to encourage more people to visit the cemeteries and learn about the rich history and heritage surrounding these places. \nNo experience necessary as a demonstration will be given and a small class size means full support can be provided! Perfect for those who like to be creative and want to try a new medium and discover more about Birmingham’s history. \nPart of this workshop takes place inside but places are limited to ensure social distancing. Face coverings will be required in the makers studio (unless exempt)\, hand sanitiser will be available. Free places available for young people who live in the Jewellery Quarter & Soho or Ladywood wards.

SUMMARY:Bombed - Full Circle
DESCRIPTION:A unique sound and light experience by artist Saranjit Birdi exploring the bombing of Coventry\, Dresden and Birmingham during World War II \n‘Bombed – Full Circle’ Part III of trilogy ‘Bombed – A Moonlight Sonata’ by Saranjit Birdi is presented on the evening of 4th June\, the day in 1940 when Winston Churchill delivered one of his most powerful speeches which called the people of Britain to action. It will be a sound and light event exploring the WWII bombing blitzes of Coventry\, Dresden and Birmingham and feature a large scale video projection onto the catacomb walls in Warstone Lane Cemetery\, which is itself connected to the history of Birmingham including both world wars. The event will include live poetry and musical performances\, plus oral histories and art from Jewellery Quarter Academy students and local artists.  \nLead artist and creator – Saranjit Birdi \nLive poetry and music performances by Phil Thomson and Christopher Foster (aka Alphaconception) \nOral history testimonies from Joan Edkins\, Hanna Kristen and Beryl Paramore\, plus Kenneth Chapman and Ray Hassall (from the Jewellery Quarter People’s Archive) \nThis event is supported and funded by Arts Council England\, National Lottery Heritage Fund\, Birmingham City Council and Jewellery Quarter Development Trust. \nThis event takes place in the evening because of the video projection element which requires the event to take place after sunset\, additional lighting and security are being hired to ensure your safety when attending\, but light levels will be lower than daytime visits. This is an outdoor space with no cover so we advice you to dress warmly and bring an umbrella. You are permitted to bring your own food and drink but please be aware there are no toilets in the cemetery (the closest public toilet is on Vyse Street).  \nThe music and audio for the event will be broadcast on wireless headphones to avoid disturbing local residents or the peaceful atmosphere of the cemetery. A small charge for tickets is required to cover the headphone hire. Headphones and seating will be sanitised before the event. \nPlaces are limited to ensure social distancing between all attendees not from the same household/bubble. Please only book tickets for your household/bubble\, as you will be seated together. This event is fully accessible for wheelchairs\, please email josie.wall@jqdt.org after booking so we can arrange your seating accordingly.  \nIf this event is cancelled due to changing COVID restrictions or severe weather conditions\, full refunds will be issued to all attendees. \nDoors open at 8.30pm for a 9pm start. We anticipate the event will end around 10.35pm.

SUMMARY:In Memoriam - with flag making workshop
DESCRIPTION:Covid-19 has presented a unique challenge for people experiencing grief and wishing to remember those who have died during the pandemic\, because we have had to place restrictions on our usual rituals around death including funerals\, wakes and memorial services in order to keep everyone safe. BrumYODO and Birmingham Hippodrome are bringing In Memoriam to Birmingham– an open-air art installation by internationally renowned artist Luke Jerram – for this year’s A Matter of Life & Death Festival. Presented in the open air at Aston Park between 8th – 16th May\, In Memoriam is a temporary memorial for the public to visit and remember all those who have died during the COVID-19 pandemic and to pay tribute to all the NHS health and care workers who have been risking their lives during the crisis. The artwork consists of 120 flags created from bed sheets arranged in the form of a medical logo. As part of In Memoriam there is also a chance for everyone to get involved by making their own flags\, either to display at home\, at Aston Park or one of the other flag displays around the city\, plus an online gallery of all the artwork. \n \nOn Sunday 16th May from 11am – 3pm we’ll be putting up an In Memoriam flag display in the new chapel garden at Warstone Lane Cemetery\, with a chance to take part by bringing a flag you have made at home (instructions available here)\, making a flag on site (limited spaces due to social distancing)\, contribute the name of a loved one to the display or view the artwork. We’ll also be giving a sneak preview of our JQ Poppy Project community tapestry so far\, which is currently being created by Woolly Mammoth Stitch Works using over 300 poppies stitched by school children and volunteers. \nIf you would like to come down to bring a flag\, add a name or view the flags there’s no need to book – the event takes place outside and we have plenty of space for social distancing. However if you would like to make a flag on the day\, please book a slot using out eventbrite link to make sure there is space and materials available for you. If you would like to take part but cannot get to the cemetery on the 16th May and don’t have your own supplies at home\, please email josie.wall@jqdt.org by Friday 7th May – we have a small number of flag making kits which can be posted to you for uploading to the online gallery. \n

SUMMARY:JQ Poppies Project - Dog tag stamping workshop
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been working with Woolly Mammoth and over 250 poppy stitchers across Birmingham to create a community tapestry artwork\, which commemorates the war dead of the JQ Cemeteries and all those killed in conflict around the world. Learn more here. \nThe cemeteries both contain war memorials\, commonwealth war graves and family graves which commemorate service personnel killed in WWI and WWII\, as well as graves belonging to civilians killed by bombing raids on Birmingham. We are creating a field of poppies\, but we’d also like to add dog tags with those names on them before the artwork is assembled ready for it’s debut this summer. \nBecause of lockdown our stitchers were all sent kits in the post\, but now we have the opportunity to come together and hand stamp the dog tags.\nThe process is very quick – you’ll get a demo from an experienced stamper and then a chance to make a dog tag for the tapestry.\nNo experience necessary. This activity is suitable for adults and children over the age of 8 years with adult supervision. \nIn order to prevent overcrowding\, we’re assigning 30 minute time slots for groups of 5 people and asking everyone to book via eventbrite.\nThe activity will take place outside in Warstone Lane Cemetery – next to the war memorial (close to the gate on Warstone Lane)\, look for the black gazebo. \nWednesday 13th April – 10am\, 10.30am and 11am\nFriday 15th April – 10am\, 10.30am and 11am\nSaturday 17th April – 11am\, 11.30am\, 12noon and 12.30pm \nIf these timeslots get filled\, more may be added on other days. \nWe’ll be ensuring that social distancing guidelines are followed to keep everyone safe. If you have any symptoms of Covid-19 please let us know so we can cancel your ticket. If you are travelling from outside the Jewellery Quarter please walk\, cycle or use your own vehicle if possible. Face coverings are required on public transport. \nDuring the Easter holidays we also have a variety of self-guided trails available\, which can be downloaded or pick up a paper copy after your stamping workshop.

DESCRIPTION:The Jewellery Quarter BID and sister projects JQ Townscape Heritage and JQ Cemeteries Project\, are offering a total of 3 video commissions for a value of £250 each as part of a West Midlands wide initiative spearheaded by Culture Central. \nOn the 21st of December\, the shortest day of the year and the last Monday before Christmas\, hundreds of 60-seconds video commissions will be premiered online responding to the prompt “It Gets Lighter From Here”. A safe online activity for half term\, get creative via zoom. \nMonday 26th October and Friday 30th October from 11am to 12.30pm. \nCome and enjoy a Zoom session of creativity ‘Painting To Music’ with Artist and experienced professional art tutor Saranjit Birdi. Bring your favourite art materials and get ready to be inspired. \nSaranjit is working with the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries Project to create a public artwork inspired by Remembrance and WWII\, which will premiere on April 10th 2021\, on the 80th Anniversary of one of the worst bombing raids which affected the Jewellery Quarter. This artwork will be a light and sound experience including music and film. Some of your artwork from this session may be included in the final piece. \nTickets are free but places are limited\, please book early to avoid disappointment. One ticket is required per household/device. A Zoom link will be sent out to the participants the day before the event.
