SUMMARY:Christmas Classics at the Catacombs
DESCRIPTION:Join Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries Project and Voice of the Town Choir for a Christmas celebration in the catacombs circle at Warstone Lane Cemetery. \nVoice of the Town is a contemporary choir which performs some of the very best material from Soul\, Gospel\, RnB\, Latin/Jazz\, Pop and Rock genres\, complete with exciting and bespoke arrangements consisting of powerful\, punchy and lush harmonies. Voice of the Town have appeared on BBC television\, with Take That (and Lulu) on 8 of their UK Greatest Hits tour dates\, and toured with stars of Strictly Come Dancing at some of the UK’s most iconic venues. They’ll be bringing us their fantastic versions of all your favourite Christmas Classic songs. \nWe’ll also be celebrating the end of the fantastically successful Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries project\, and thanking all our community partners and stakeholders for making the project possible over the last two years. \nThis free event takes place outside so please wrap up warmly. Lighting levels will be low\, as the space will be lit with candles and lanterns\, so please take extra care when moving around the cemetery. Meet figures from Birmingham’s past beside their resting places in Warstone Lane and Key Hill Cemeteries\, as brought to life by costumed volunteers\, storytelling and live music. \nThis performance is a socially distanced piece of promenade performance – the audience will move between stops on the tour route\, encountering vignettes and characters from history along the way. \nThere are opportunities for the audience to become part of the story and learn more about Birmingham figures\, both well-known and often overlooked\, plus the rich history of the cemetery landscapes. \nTours will begin at Key Hill cemetery and last around 1.5 hours. Social distancing rules will be followed throughout the performance; booking is essential due to limited numbers of tickets. \nAccess information: \nThe paths in both cemeteries have been recently resurfaced to provide level access from Vyse St\, Icknield St\, Pitsford St (Warstone Lane Cemetery) and Icknield St and Key Hill (Key Hill Cemetery)\, but some of the tour locations will involve crossing onto grassed areas which can be uneven. A digital copy of the script will be available for people with hearing impairments. There are no toilet facilities in the cemeteries\, the public toilet on Vyse Street is now open to the public again. DESCRIPTION:The catacombs at Warstone Lane cemetery are a fantastic venue for events with the circular walls forming a sheltered space with great acoustics.\nWe are filling them with music on a sunny Saturday afternoon. SUMMARY:Bombed - Full Circle
DESCRIPTION:A unique sound and light experience by artist Saranjit Birdi exploring the bombing of Coventry\, Dresden and Birmingham during World War II \n‘Bombed – Full Circle’ Part III of trilogy ‘Bombed – A Moonlight Sonata’ by Saranjit Birdi is presented on the evening of 4th June\, the day in 1940 when Winston Churchill delivered one of his most powerful speeches which called the people of Britain to action. It will be a sound and light event exploring the WWII bombing blitzes of Coventry\, Dresden and Birmingham and feature a large scale video projection onto the catacomb walls in Warstone Lane Cemetery\, which is itself connected to the history of Birmingham including both world wars. The event will include live poetry and musical performances\, plus oral histories and art from Jewellery Quarter Academy students and local artists.  \nLead artist and creator – Saranjit Birdi \nLive poetry and music performances by Phil Thomson and Christopher Foster (aka Alphaconception) \nOral history testimonies from Joan Edkins\, Hanna Kristen and Beryl Paramore\, plus Kenneth Chapman and Ray Hassall (from the Jewellery Quarter People’s Archive) \nThis event is supported and funded by Arts Council England\, National Lottery Heritage Fund\, Birmingham City Council and Jewellery Quarter Development Trust. \nThis event takes place in the evening because of the video projection element which requires the event to take place after sunset\, additional lighting and security are being hired to ensure your safety when attending\, but light levels will be lower than daytime visits. This is an outdoor space with no cover so we advice you to dress warmly and bring an umbrella. You are permitted to bring your own food and drink but please be aware there are no toilets in the cemetery (the closest public toilet is on Vyse Street).  \nThe music and audio for the event will be broadcast on wireless headphones to avoid disturbing local residents or the peaceful atmosphere of the cemetery. A small charge for tickets is required to cover the headphone hire. Headphones and seating will be sanitised before the event. \nPlaces are limited to ensure social distancing between all attendees not from the same household/bubble. Please only book tickets for your household/bubble\, as you will be seated together. This event is fully accessible for wheelchairs\, please email josie.wall@jqdt.org after booking so we can arrange your seating accordingly.  \nIf this event is cancelled due to changing COVID restrictions or severe weather conditions\, full refunds will be issued to all attendees. \nDoors open at 8.30pm for a 9pm start. The night Titanic sank. \nJonathan Goodwin performs in a show scripted by himself\, and directed by Gary Archer. \nTickets are £10 per person and limited to a max of 6 people from one household.
