SUMMARY:Jewellery Quarter Gothic Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:We’re exploring the Gothic side of the Jewellery Quarter with tour guide Ian Braisby\, who’ll be leading a walking tour that takes in two Victorian Cemeteries (with tales of the cruel realities of life in 19th century Birmingham) plus some of the darker landmarks around the Jewellery Quarter – including sites of murder and execution. \nThen it’s off to the Shakespeare Inn to warm up with a hot meal in a cosy Victorian Gin Parlour. We’ll finish the day by stepping back in time for a candlelit tour of the unique Coffin Works Museum – a time capsule which perfectly preserves the Newman Brothers coffin fittings factory\, built in 1894. \nFood and drink at the Shakespeare Inn are not included in the price of this ticket\, but ticket holders will get 20% off their bill (including all hot and cold food options from the seasonal menu and the full range of alcoholic and soft drinks). \nPlease meet at the gates of Warstone Lane Cemetery on Vyse Street.

SUMMARY:Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries at War Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Blue Badge Guide Robin Draper for a unique tour of the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries\, in honour of Armistice Day. Both Key Hill and Warstone Lane Cemeteries contain stories of war and remembrance- linked to war graves\, family memorials and the war memorials in both cemeteries. Learn about soldiers\, civilians and the impact of war on the cemeteries themselves. \nWe’ll meet outside the Rose Villa Tavern and walk across to the cemeteries together for this tour which will take around 90 minutes. Although the paths in the cemeteries have been resurfaced\, some of the graves on the tour are away from the paths and so we recommend you wear sturdy footwear. SUMMARY:Key Hill Catacombs Tours
DESCRIPTION:Unique hard hat tour inside Birmingham’s oldest catacombs\, learn about how they were built and see the interior architecture. \nThe Catacombs in Key Hill Cemetery are the oldest in Birmingham and are a unique architectural structure which became the final resting place for many Birmingham families. The exterior of the catacombs underwent repairs in 2019-2020 and now some additional works are being carried out on the interior\, so this is your chance to have a peak inside as part of a unique hard hat tour. Learn about how the catacombs were built\, view the interior architecture and memorials\, and get a chance to see inside some of the unused catacombs. No human remains or coffins will be visible on this tour. \nLighting levels are low in the catacombs so in addition to hard hats and hi vis vests\, LED lanterns will be issued to all participants. Although work has begun to improve the flooring\, we still advise wearing sturdy footwear due to uneven surfaces. Face coverings are also strongly advised because the air can be dusty (we will have disposable masks available). This tour is not accessible for wheelchair users\, but we hope this will change in the future. \nNumbers are limited and booking is essential in order to ensure social distancing can be observed. \nTours last 45 mins and start at 10am\, 11am\, 12pm\, 2pm\, 3pm and 4pm

SUMMARY:Fungi Walk
DESCRIPTION:Free fungi walk\, an introduction to the wonderful world of mushrooms in the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries with expert guide Lukas Large\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis free walk is funded by the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries project in partnership with National Lottery Heritage Fund\, Birmingham City Council and Jewellery Quarter Development Trust. \nLukas Large\, Natural Science Curator from Birmingham Museums Trust will lead you around the cemeteries\, with chances to learn about the wonderful world of fungi and why they are so important. \nThis guided walk will last up to 2 hours and may include walking on uneven ground\, because the best fungi might not be near the pathways. What we look at will vary according to the season and where the walk takes us. We will meet outside The Big Peg and then walk over to the cemeteries together. \nThis walk is FREE but places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. This event takes place outside and social distancing will be encouraged\, but you may want to bring a face covering or mask to wear during the session to allow the group to gather closer to the fungi.

SUMMARY:Unburied Treasures
DESCRIPTION:Working in conjunction with The Bone Ensemble\, creating a unique performance tour experience\, uncovering stories from the Jewellery Quarter\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorking in conjunction with The Bone Ensemble\, we are creating a unique performance tour experience\, uncovering stories from the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries. Meet figures from Birmingham’s past beside their resting places in Warstone Lane and Key Hill Cemeteries\, as brought to life by costumed volunteers\, storytelling and live music. \nThis performance is a socially distanced piece of promenade performance – the audience will move between stops on the tour route\, encountering vignettes and characters from history along the way. \nThere are opportunities for the audience to become part of the story and learn more about Birmingham figures\, both well-known and often overlooked\, plus the rich history of the cemetery landscapes. \nTours will begin at Key Hill cemetery and last around 1.5 hours. Social distancing rules will be followed throughout the performance; booking is essential due to limited numbers of tickets. \nAccess information: \nThe paths in both cemeteries have been recently resurfaced to provide level access from Vyse St\, Icknield St\, Pitsford St (Warstone Lane Cemetery) and Icknield St and Key Hill (Key Hill Cemetery)\, but some of the tour locations will involve crossing onto grassed areas which can be uneven. A digital copy of the script will be available for people with hearing impairments. There are no toilet facilities in the cemeteries\, the public toilet on Vyse Street is now open to the public again. Please contact us by email josie.wall@jqdt.org if you have any concerns or additional access requirements. \nCovid-19: \nDue to Covid-19 there are limited places for this event. If you find you can no longer attend please let us know so we can reimburse you and offer your place to someone else. \nWe will keep attendee details for 21 days after the event in case they are needed for NHS track and trace.
