SUMMARY:Key Hill Snowflake Trail
DESCRIPTION:Christmas is just around the corner\, and our snowflake trail is back for a 2nd year!\nWrap up warm and take a wintery walk around Key Hill\, hunting for snowflakes and crunching through a blanket of fallen leaves!\nThe cemetery has undergone extensive restoration including path resurfacing and drainage improvements\, so there are plenty of buggy friendly routes and no muddy puddles. \nOur snowflake trail has been made with wooden snowflakes and natural cordage (no plastic here) which will decorate areas of Key Hill Cemetery for you to discover.\nAfter you visit the snowflakes at Key Hill Cemetery you can then choose one snowflake to take home with you to put on your Christmas tree. You can even decorate it with paint or other embellishments if you are feeling crafty! \nWe’d love to see where they end up\, so share a photo of your snowflake with us on social media using #JQSnowflakes. \nThis event is FREE and open to all.. \nThere are no handwashing or toilet facilities in the cemetery\, so please bring hand sanitiser. The nearest public toilet is on Vyse St\, about a 5 minute walk away.\nThe cemetery is accessible from the Key Hill and Icknield Street gates and is open 24/7. Please be aware that there is no lighting in the cemetery\, so we do not recommend visiting after dusk. \nThe event will run from December 18th to January 4th and the cemetery and snowflake trail will be checked periodically\, but if you encounter any issues\, please email josie.wall@jqdt.org to let us know. \nWant to know more? Watch the video we made for last year’s event! The main difference this year is that we have over 200 snowflakes this time and we’ve leaving the trail up until the new year to give you more time to go hunting!

SUMMARY:Jewellery Quarter Gothic Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:We’re exploring the Gothic side of the Jewellery Quarter with tour guide Ian Braisby\, who’ll be leading a walking tour that takes in two Victorian Cemeteries (with tales of the cruel realities of life in 19th century Birmingham) plus some of the darker landmarks around the Jewellery Quarter – including sites of murder and execution. \nThen it’s off to the Shakespeare Inn to warm up with a hot meal in a cosy Victorian Gin Parlour. We’ll finish the day by stepping back in time for a candlelit tour of the unique Coffin Works Museum – a time capsule which perfectly preserves the Newman Brothers coffin fittings factory\, built in 1894. \nFood and drink at the Shakespeare Inn are not included in the price of this ticket\, but ticket holders will get 20% off their bill (including all hot and cold food options from the seasonal menu and the full range of alcoholic and soft drinks). \nPlease meet at the gates of Warstone Lane Cemetery on Vyse Street.

SUMMARY:Buddleia Busters
DESCRIPTION:The jewellery quarter cemeteries are rich in biodiversity and natural habitats\, but not all the plants which grow there are suitable for the environment.\nBuddleia has a reputation for being loved by butterflies\, but also has many downsides – it’s not a native plant\, and it can be extremely destructive thanks to it’s habit of growing out of walls\, grave monuments and other inappropriate locations. \nDuring September and October we are working with Sustainable Life to remove buddleia from Warstone Lane cemetery where it is becoming very invasive\, so that we can plant native fruit trees and bushes instead – which will be less destructive and offer better wildlife habits. \nIn these practical and hands on sessions we’ll be learning how to recognise buddleia (and other invasive plants)\, how to safely prune them back and working with Birmingham City Council to get the cut branches cleared away for mulching. No experience necessary\, all training and equipment is provided. This session takes place outside and social distancing will be observed. \nWe’ll be in the cemetery every Thursday from 2nd September til 7th October from 3pm til 6pm. You don’t have to come for the whole session\, or commit to coming every week. If you are interested in helping us\, please email josie.wall@jqdt.org to sign up.

SUMMARY:Fungi Walk
DESCRIPTION:Free fungi walk\, an introduction to the wonderful world of mushrooms in the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries with expert guide Lukas Large\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis free walk is funded by the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries project in partnership with National Lottery Heritage Fund\, Birmingham City Council and Jewellery Quarter Development Trust. \nLukas Large\, Natural Science Curator from Birmingham Museums Trust will lead you around the cemeteries\, with chances to learn about the wonderful world of fungi and why they are so important. \nThis guided walk will last up to 2 hours and may include walking on uneven ground\, because the best fungi might not be near the pathways. What we look at will vary according to the season and where the walk takes us. We will meet outside The Big Peg and then walk over to the cemeteries together. \nThis walk is FREE but places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. This event takes place outside and social distancing will be encouraged\, but you may want to bring a face covering or mask to wear during the session to allow the group to gather closer to the fungi.

SUMMARY:Key Hill Catacombs Tours
DESCRIPTION:Unique hard hat tour inside Birmingham’s oldest catacombs\, learn about how they were built and see the interior architecture. \nThe Catacombs in Key Hill Cemetery are the oldest in Birmingham and are a unique architectural structure which became the final resting place for many Birmingham families. The exterior of the catacombs underwent repairs in 2019-2020 and now some additional works are being carried out on the interior\, so this is your chance to have a peak inside as part of a unique hard hat tour. Learn about how the catacombs were built\, view the interior architecture and memorials\, and get a chance to see inside some of the unused catacombs. No human remains or coffins will be visible on this tour. \nLighting levels are low in the catacombs so in addition to hard hats and hi vis vests\, LED lanterns will be issued to all participants. Although work has begun to improve the flooring\, we still advise wearing sturdy footwear due to uneven surfaces. Face coverings are also strongly advised because the air can be dusty (we will have disposable masks available). This tour is not accessible for wheelchair users\, but we hope this will change in the future. \nNumbers are limited and booking is essential in order to ensure social distancing can be observed. \nTours last 45 mins and start at 4.30pm and 5.30pm\nTHIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT

DESCRIPTION:Working in conjunction with The Bone Ensemble\, creating a unique performance tour experience\, uncovering stories from the Jewellery Quarter\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorking in conjunction with The Bone Ensemble\, we are creating a unique performance tour experience\, uncovering stories from the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries. Meet figures from Birmingham’s past beside their resting places in Warstone Lane and Key Hill Cemeteries\, as brought to life by costumed volunteers\, storytelling and live music. \nThis performance is a socially distanced piece of promenade performance – the audience will move between stops on the tour route\, encountering vignettes and characters from history along the way. \nThere are opportunities for the audience to become part of the story and learn more about Birmingham figures\, both well-known and often overlooked\, plus the rich history of the cemetery landscapes. \nTours will begin at Key Hill cemetery and last around 1.5 hours.

SUMMARY:Cyanotype Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A hands on workshop\, learning how to make cyanotype blueprints – an early photographic technique using foraged and natural materials. \nOutdoor workshop in the chapel footprint garden in Warstone Lane Cemetery with artist Jo Gane\, places limited to ensure social distancing. \nThis workshop offers a hands-on opportunity to make cyanotype blueprints. The cyanotype process is one of the earliest photographic processes\, invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842 and involves using paper coated with light sensitive iron salts to produce prints with a distinctive Prussian blue colour. \nPrints can be made with natural materials foraged from around the cemetery such as leaves and feathers – or feel free to bring objects to work with. If you are bringing materials to print from\, small objects (no bigger than an A4 sheet) which can lie flat and are partially opaque work the best – lace and fabrics can be very effective. Jo will be bringing pre-coated cyanotype paper for ease of use out on location\, however instructions and support about how to coat paper and work with this process at home will also be provided.

SUMMARY:Meet The Trees Walk
DESCRIPTION:A free tree walk with Sustainable Life in the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries \nVictorian cemeteries are full of different trees and are a great place to learn about many of our native species as well as a variety of more exotic imports. Join Sustainable Life\, the brilliant brains behind our new tree trail to meet the trees\, learn how to identify them\, plus understand their uses and value as wildlife habitat. \nWe’ll meet outside the Big Peg and walk over to the cemeteries together. This free event is an outdoor walk and social distancing will be observed but you might wish to bring a mask or face covering to allow the group to gather around and look at examples together more easily. Places are limited and booking is essential.
