SUMMARY:Online Talk - A History of Key Hill & of Key Hill House
DESCRIPTION:A free online talk about James Watt’s first Birmingham home\, the history of Key Hill House and the surrounding area. \nKey Hill sits on the edge of what remained in the latter part of the 18th century of Birmingham Heath. Its history reflects the history of the heath and of the growing town of Birmingham. Its natural geology has played an important role in its development first by the Overseers of the Poor and then as the General Cemetery. \nKey Hill House was the first Birmingham home that the Scottish engineer James Watt returned to from Scotland with his young son\, James junior. Though the Watts leased the house for only six months it stood for a further 120 years and the subsequent tenants and owners reflect the industrial development of the area and as such are no less interesting. \nWhen George Demidowicz\, who has published extensively on the historical geography and archaeology of Birmingham and the West Midlands\, and John Townley\, an independent researcher with an interest in steam power\, realised that they were both researching the same building\, Harper’s Hill House\, they decided to pool their efforts. What has subsequently emerged is a history of all three of James Watt’s Birmingham homes: Key Hill House\, New Hall and Harper’s Hill House\, the homes that he lived in for fifteen years before his final move out the town of Birmingham to Heathfield\, in Handsworth. \nThis talk is free but places are limited. The talk will take place via zoom and ticket holders will be sent a link to join on the day of the event.

SUMMARY:JQ Poppies Project - Dog tag stamping workshop
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been working with Woolly Mammoth and over 250 poppy stitchers across Birmingham to create a community tapestry artwork\, which commemorates the war dead of the JQ Cemeteries and all those killed in conflict around the world. Learn more here. \nThe cemeteries both contain war memorials\, commonwealth war graves and family graves which commemorate service personnel killed in WWI and WWII\, as well as graves belonging to civilians killed by bombing raids on Birmingham. We are creating a field of poppies\, but we’d also like to add dog tags with those names on them before the artwork is assembled ready for it’s debut this summer. \nBecause of lockdown our stitchers were all sent kits in the post\, but now we have the opportunity to come together and hand stamp the dog tags.\nThe process is very quick – you’ll get a demo from an experienced stamper and then a chance to make a dog tag for the tapestry.\nNo experience necessary. This activity is suitable for adults and children over the age of 8 years with adult supervision. \nIn order to prevent overcrowding\, we’re assigning 30 minute time slots for groups of 5 people and asking everyone to book via eventbrite.\nThe activity will take place outside in Warstone Lane Cemetery – next to the war memorial (close to the gate on Warstone Lane)\, look for the black gazebo. \nWednesday 13th April – 10am\, 10.30am and 11am\nFriday 15th April – 10am\, 10.30am and 11am\nSaturday 17th April – 11am\, 11.30am\, 12noon and 12.30pm \nIf these timeslots get filled\, more may be added on other days. \nWe’ll be ensuring that social distancing guidelines are followed to keep everyone safe. If you have any symptoms of Covid-19 please let us know so we can cancel your ticket. If you are travelling from outside the Jewellery Quarter please walk\, cycle or use your own vehicle if possible. Face coverings are required on public transport. \nDuring the Easter holidays we also have a variety of self-guided trails available\, which can be downloaded or pick up a paper copy after your stamping workshop.

SUMMARY:Online talk - Traditions of Death and Burial
DESCRIPTION:A FREE Online talk with Dr Helen Frisby exploring the fascinating traditions which have surrounded death\, grief and burial from ancient times to the present day. \nDeath has been a source of grief and uncertainty for humanity throughout history\, but it has also inspired a plethora of fascinating traditions. The covering of mirrors to prevent the departed spirit from seeing itself; the passing bell rung to assist the soul to heaven; the ‘sin eater’ who by eating and drinking absorbed the corpse’s sins – all of these were common approaches at one time or another. Taking evidence from history\, archaeology and folklore\, this talk explores English approaches to death and burial from the Norman conquest to the present day: ancient customs which have long since lapsed\, others which have survived relatively unchanged\, and new approaches such as eco-burials – and of course the impact of Covid-19 upon our way of dying. Weaving their way through ten centuries of funerary customs\, we’ll see again and again the threads of affection and duty which tether the living to the dead\, and oblige us to acknowledge our own mortality. \nHelen Frisby obtained her PhD on Victorian funeral customs from the University of Leeds in 2009. She’s appeared on the History Channel and BBC Radio\, and is the author of Traditions of Death and Burial (Bloomsbury: 2019) upon which this talk is based. Helen’s most recent research\, conducted through the University of Bristol with Dr Stuart Prior\, investigates the informal occupational culture of frontline cemetery staff. Helen is Secretary of the Association for the Study of Death & Society (ASDS) and a Council Member of the Folklore Society. \nThis talk will take place via Zoom. Ticket holders will be sent a link and password to join the zoom session on the day of the talk.

SUMMARY:Key Hill Cemetery Snowflake Trail
DESCRIPTION:Christmas is just around the corner\, and we’ll all be looking to celebrate in socially distanced and COVID safe ways.\nWrap up warm and take a wintery walk around Key Hill\, hunting for snowflakes and crunching through a blanket of fallen leaves!\nThe cemetery has undergone extensive restoration this year including path resurfacing and drainage improvements\, so there are plenty of buggy friendly routes and no muddy puddles. \nOur snowflake trail has been made with wooden snowflakes and natural cordage (no plastic here) which will decorate areas of Key Hill Cemetery for you to discover.\nAfter you visit the snowflakes at Key Hill Cemetery you can then choose one snowflake to take home with you to put on your Christmas tree. You can even decorate it with paint or other embellishments if you are feeling crafty! \nWe’d love to see where they end up\, so share a photo of your snowflake with us on social media using #JQSnowflakes. If you can’t join us in person – don’t worry – we’ll be recording a video too! \nThis event is FREE and open to all\, but please remember to make room for others on the trail and keep a safe distance for people outside of your household/bubble. \nThere are no handwashing or toilet facilities in the cemetery\, so please bring hand sanitiser. The nearest public toilet is on Vyse St\, about a 5 minute walk away.\nThe cemetery is accessible from the Key Hill and Icknield Street gates and is open 24/7. Please be aware that there is no lighting in the cemetery\, so we do not recommend visiting after dusk. \nThe event will run from December 12th to December 21st and the cemetery and snowflake trail will be checked periodically\, but if you encounter any issues\, please email josie.wall@jqdt.org to let us know. \n \nhttps://youtu.be/AQ-xfZX-a5s

SUMMARY:Online Talk -Pet Cemetery: Loving and Losing Animals\, 1880-1948
DESCRIPTION:An online talk by Dr Julie-Marie Strange looking at the fascinating history of commercial pet cemeteries and pet bereavement from 1880-1948. \nTickets are free but booking is required. Ticket holders will be sent a link and password to join the zoom session on the day of the talk. \nThe commercial pet cemetery was established in the UK by the mid 1880s. Like scale models of municipal burial grounds\, pet cemeteries borrowed heavily from long established mourning practices for humans. But if cemeteries for humans evoked reverence and respect\, social commentary on the pet cemetery treated it as a sentimental space\, an indulgence of mawkish and excessive feeling. This lecture explores why the pet cemetery\, and by extension\, pet bereavement were treated with disdain and considers how owners of pet graves sought to use the pet cemetery to create an emotional community for the pet bereaved. \nJulie-Marie Strange moved to Durham University as Professor of Modern British History in October 2019. Her first book explored Death\, Grief and Poverty\, 1870-1914 (CUP 2015)\, a pitch for understanding working-class and marginalised people’s responses to bereavement as complex\, nuanced and profound. Her second monograph\, Fatherhood and the British Working Class\, 1865-1914 (CUP 2015) considered what it meant to be and have a working-class dad in Victorian and Edwardian Britain. Collaborative books include The Charity Market: Humanitarianism in Britain\, 18701-1912 (Bloomsbury\, 2018) with Sarah Roddy and The Invention of the Modern Dog: Breed and Blood in Victorian Britain (Johns Hopkins\, 2018) with Michael Worboys and Neil Pemberton. Her new co-authored book with Jane Hamlett\, ‘Pets: A History’ will be out in the next 18 months. Julie-Marie’s new solo project is ‘Love in the Time of Capitalism: Emotion and the Making of the Working Class\, 1848-1914’ begins in October 2020.
