SUMMARY:Pumpkin Spectacular
DESCRIPTION:This year Halloween will be a very different because we won’t be able to go trick or treating or have big Halloween parties.\nWe wanted to create an event so we can all enjoy the magic of the season safely.\n\nHow to get involved with the Pumpkin Spectacular:\n1. Have fun at home carving your pumpkin\n\n2. Arrange a time to drop it off with us by emailing josie.wall@jqdt.org. We can accept pumpkins from 26th to 30th October but as our building is closed to the public during renovation works\, you need to make an appointment so we can arrange to meet you.\n\n3. We create a beautiful display of all the pumpkins in the unique and atmospheric surroundings of the catacombs at Warstone Lane Cemetery. We will make a film of the display featuring everyone’s creative pumpkins. You will be able to watch the film on our website\, youtube and here on facebook.\nWe’ll email everyone who donates a pumpkin a link to watch the film on 31st October. to make sure you don’t miss it!\n\n4. After the event the pumpkins will be donated to Highbury Orchard who will use them to feed wildlife and for composting. This means there is no waste generated by this event.\nPlease note that we cannot arrange the return of your pumpkin.

SUMMARY:Online Talk -Pet Cemetery: Loving and Losing Animals\, 1880-1948
DESCRIPTION:An online talk by Dr Julie-Marie Strange looking at the fascinating history of commercial pet cemeteries and pet bereavement from 1880-1948. \nTickets are free but booking is required. Ticket holders will be sent a link and password to join the zoom session on the day of the talk. \nThe commercial pet cemetery was established in the UK by the mid 1880s. Like scale models of municipal burial grounds\, pet cemeteries borrowed heavily from long established mourning practices for humans. But if cemeteries for humans evoked reverence and respect\, social commentary on the pet cemetery treated it as a sentimental space\, an indulgence of mawkish and excessive feeling. This lecture explores why the pet cemetery\, and by extension\, pet bereavement were treated with disdain and considers how owners of pet graves sought to use the pet cemetery to create an emotional community for the pet bereaved. \nJulie-Marie Strange moved to Durham University as Professor of Modern British History in October 2019. Her first book explored Death\, Grief and Poverty\, 1870-1914 (CUP 2015)\, a pitch for understanding working-class and marginalised people’s responses to bereavement as complex\, nuanced and profound. Her second monograph\, Fatherhood and the British Working Class\, 1865-1914 (CUP 2015) considered what it meant to be and have a working-class dad in Victorian and Edwardian Britain. Collaborative books include The Charity Market: Humanitarianism in Britain\, 18701-1912 (Bloomsbury\, 2018) with Sarah Roddy and The Invention of the Modern Dog: Breed and Blood in Victorian Britain (Johns Hopkins\, 2018) with Michael Worboys and Neil Pemberton. Her new co-authored book with Jane Hamlett\, ‘Pets: A History’ will be out in the next 18 months. Julie-Marie’s new solo project is ‘Love in the Time of Capitalism: Emotion and the Making of the Working Class\, 1848-1914’ begins in October 2020.

SUMMARY:Meet the Contractors - Site Visit to Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries
DESCRIPTION:The landscaping work on both Key Hill and Warstone Lane Cemeteries is almost completed. The contractors HFN Landscaping will be showing us around the site and explaining the work they have undertaken\, plus a sneak preview of the Garden of Memory which will be completed later this year. There will also be a representative from Birmingham City Council Bereavement Services on hand to answer questions about how the cemeteries will be managed once the restoration is complete. The Activities Programme Manager for the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries project will also be explaining future plans for events and volunteering activities. \nWe are meeting at Jewellery Quarter Station at 10am and will walk down to the site at Key Hill Cemetery together. Hi Vis vests will be provided for all visitors to ensure that we stay safe on site. Social distancing will be observed and numbers are strictly limited to ensure safety. \nWe will be walking around both cemeteries for approximately 1 hour. The newly resurfaced pathways provide good access but there are some areas of steep terrain. Please contact josie.wall@jqdt.org if you have any concerns or access requirements. \nWe advice the public to walk\, cycle or use a private vehicle where possible to attend this event. Please note that a face covering should be worn on public transport. If you have any symptoms of COVID-19 or share a household with anyone who has symptoms\, please do not attend. Follow government guidelines on self-isolation and testing.
