The jewellery quarter cemeteries are rich in biodiversity and natural habitats, but not all the plants which grow there are suitable for the environment.
Buddleia has a reputation for being loved by butterflies, but also has many downsides – it’s not a native plant, and it can be extremely destructive thanks to it’s habit of growing out of walls, grave monuments and other inappropriate locations.

During September and October we are working with Sustainable Life to remove buddleia from Warstone Lane cemetery where it is becoming very invasive, so that we can plant native fruit trees and bushes instead – which will be less destructive and offer better wildlife habits.

In these practical and hands on sessions we’ll be learning how to recognise buddleia (and other invasive plants), how to safely prune them back and working with Birmingham City Council to get the cut branches cleared away for mulching. No experience necessary, all training and equipment is provided. This session takes place outside and social distancing will be observed.

We’ll be in the cemetery every Thursday from 2nd September til 7th October from 3pm til 6pm. You don’t have to come for the whole session, or commit to coming every week. If you are interested in helping us, please email josie.wall@jqdt.org to sign up.
